Special Issue on
Software and Compilers for Embedded Systems (SCOPES)
The influence of embedded systems is constantly growing. Increasingly powerful and versatile devices are developed and put on the market at a fast pace. The number of features is increasing, and so are the constraints on the systems concerning size, performance, energy dissipation and timing predictability. Since most systems today use a processor to execute an application program rather than using dedicated hardware, the requirements can not be fulfilled by hardware architects alone: Hardware and software have to work together to meet the tight constraints put on modern devices.
This special issue focuses on the software generation process for modern embedded systems. This includes all aspects of the compilation process, starting with suitable modeling and specification techniques and programming languages for embedded systems. The emphasis lies on code generation techniques for embedded processors. The exploitation of specialized instruction set characteristics is as important as the development of new optimizations for embedded application domains. Cost criteria for the entire code generation and optimization process include runtime, timing predictability, energy dissipation, code size and others. Since today's embedded devices frequently consist of a multi-processor system-on-chip, contributions about compilation techniques for MPSoC architectures would be especially welcome.
Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
- Modeling, Specification and Programming Languages
- Exploitation of specialized Instruction Set Characteristics
- New Optimizations/Analyses for Embedded Application Domains
- Compilation Techniques for MPSoC Architectures
- Memory-Aware Compilation Techniques
- Compiler Support for Architecture Exploration
- Interactions between Operating Systems and Compilers
- Compiler aided Profiling, Measurement, Debugging and Validation
- Optimization of Average or Worst-Case Performance
- Energy Dissipation Minimization
A selected number of top papers from the International Workshop on Software and Compiler for Embedded Systems (SCOPES) 2007 - 2009 will be invited by the guest editors for review. Besides submissions from SCOPES, any other high quality submission that fits the topics of this special issue is welcome. All invited papers will be subjected to the same rigorous review process as the regular submissions to this special issue. Authors should submit their journal version at Manuscript Central adhering to the formatting instructions on the TECS Web page and indicate that they are submitting to the SCOPES Special Issue (on the first page and in the field "Author's Cover Letter:" in Manuscript Central). For additional questions, please send an email.
